My creative process is a random series of controlled accidents.

First I choose the base material as it will determine how the ink moves. Watercolor paper absorbs the ink before it takes form, Yupo paper is plastic paper so the ink sits on top and is more movable, and canvas is somewhere in-between.

I select my starting ink and squirt, drip, and draw a beginning design. I then spray it with water and cover it with bits of wax paper, cellophane, or clear plastic wrap and leave it to dry which could take up to a week.

When it's dry I check to see how it has changed and decide where the next layer will be. My art experience and instincts guide me as to where the next design will develop.

Absolute control is impossible and I never know where the process will lead or when it will end. I just keep going until I'm satisfied with the results. There could be as many as 40 layers of ink which establishes texture as well as the overall interaction of color.

I'm often working on five or more paintings at one time at various stages of completion.

It can be frustrating and disappointing at times if a painting reaches a stage of stagnation and I can't see the next step, at which point I start over.

Why do I paint? Because I really enjoy the creative process which is full of surprises and very rewarding when it all comes together in a satisfying way.
